UNLOCKING HIDDEN CITY SPACE TO CREATE HIGH-SPEC, FULLY LET STUDENT HOUSING

A purpose-built seven-bedroom student house on a backland garden plot off North View, in the Edge Hill area of Liverpool close to the university campus.

Rather than squeeze in a standard property, we worked with the architect on a one-and-a-half-storey design that sits low in the plot. The finished product was something that has been nominated for different architectural awards. The lower floor is brick with the bedrooms opening onto a sunken lightwell and the main garden, and the upper floor is clad in black corrugated metal with ribbon windows.

One of the bedrooms has an en-suite, with a shared open-plan kitchen and lounge. Outside there's a large lawned garden, block-paved paths and a raised timber seating area – a lot more outdoor space than most student housing in the city.

The house was built to full HMO standard with fire doors, alarm system and emergency lighting throughout, and was let in full for its first academic year.
